Tennis terms

Tennis is a racket sport played between two players (singles) or two teams of two (doubles). Players hit a felt-covered rubber ball over a net on a rectangular court, trying to land it where the opponent can't return it. How it works A point starts with a serve, and the players then rally until someone fails to return the ball within the court, hits it into the net, or hits it out. Points are counted 0 (called "love"), 15, 30, 40, then game. A player must win by two points, so a tied score at 40-40 is "deuce." Games make up sets, usually first to six games with a two-game margin, and sets make up a match, typically best of three or best of five. Court and surfaces The court is 78 feet (23.77 m) long, with a net across the middle. The main surfaces are hard court, clay, and grass, and each changes how the ball bounces and how fast play is. Clay is slower with higher bounces, while grass is faster with lower bounces. Professional tennis The sport is best known for the four Grand Slam tournaments: the Australian Open, the French Open (Roland Garros), Wimbledon, and the US Open. Beyond those, there are the ATP and WTA tours, the Olympics, and team events like the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup. Why people like it It's a mix of athleticism, strategy, and mental toughness, and it can be played at any level, from casual games at a local club to elite competition. What Carlos Alcaraz said about matching Djokovic, Nadal & Federer’s Grand Slam totals +3 Rafael Nadal, 22 titles. He won 14 French Opens, the record for any player at one Slam. He is the youngest man to win all four majors, completing the set at the 2010 US Open aged 24 (a record Alcaraz has since broken, see below). tennis365 tennis365 Roger Federer, 20 titles. He has eight Wimbledons. He won his 20th and last Slam at the 2018 Australian Open, aged 36. itftennis gulfnews Combined: From 2003 Wimbledon through 2023 US Open, the trio won 66 of the 79 Slams. atptour Other greats (from memory) Pete Sampras: 14 titles, including seven Wimbledons, and he never won the French Open. Rod Laver: The only man to win the calendar-year Grand Slam twice (1962 and 1969), once as an amateur and once in the Open Era. Bjorn Borg: Five straight Wimbledons from 1976 to 1980, plus six French Opens. The new generation Carlos Alcaraz, 7 titles. The sources I found put him on 7 as of mid-2026, with a career Grand Slam at 22. He completed it at the 2026 Australian Open. He had already won more majors than any of the Big Three had at his age. Most Grand Slam Titles: Men’s & Women’s All-Time Lists +2 Jannik Sinner, 4 or 5 titles. He had four going into Wimbledon, and the ATP lists him as the 2026 Wimbledon champion, which would make five. In 2024 he became the first man since Guillermo Vilas in 1977 to win his first two Slams in the same season. Most Grand Slam Titles: Men’s & Women’s All-Time Lists +2 Alexander Zverev: His French Open win in 2026 was the first major won by anyone outside the Alcaraz-Sinner duopoly since 2023. He then won the US Open, beating Ben Shelton. legionreport adda247 The duopoly: Alcaraz and Sinner won seven straight majors between the 2024 Australian Open and 2025 Wimbledon. That ranks among the five greatest in the Open Era, behind Federer and Nadal’s 11 in a row from 2005 to 2007. tennis365 tennis365 Women Margaret Court, 24 titles. She holds the all-time women’s record, tied with Djokovic’s total. She won 62 Grand Slam titles in all, counting doubles and mixed. She completed the calendar-year Grand Slam in 1970. Most Grand Slam Titles: Men’s & Women’s All-Time Lists +2 Serena Williams, 23 titles. The most by any woman in the Open Era. That includes 7 Australian Opens, 3 French Opens, 7 Wimbledons and 6 US Opens. legionreport tennishead Steffi Graf, 22 titles. Her Golden Slam in 1988 (all four majors plus Olympic gold) still stands alone. legionreport Martina Navratilova: 18 singles Slams (from memory) and 31 doubles titles. She lost the 2026 US Open final. wtatennis Elena Rybakina: She beat Sabalenka in three sets to win the 2026 US Open. adda247 Mirra Andreeva: Won her first Slam in 2026. legionreport Why the numbers matter Men’s race to 25: Djokovic needs one more to pass Court outright. Alcaraz and Sinner: Both are on pace to challenge the Big Three’s totals, though they will need a long run of titles to reach 20. Women’s chase: Nobody active is near Court or Serena, so those totals look safe for now. The margins are narrow, and the Nadal one is about 31-29 from memory. calpoly The surface split matters: Federer went 2-14 against Nadal on clay. tennis Why people argue about it Djokovic has the best numbers and the best record against both. Nadal has the most dominant single-event record (14 French Opens). His uncle, Toni Nadal, noted that Rafael missed many Slams with injuries and played others while injured. tennishead Federer is the style icon and Wimbledon’s greatest. Carlos Alcaraz (born 2003, Spain) Slams: Seven. They are the US Open (2022, 2025), Wimbledon (2023, 2024) and French Open (2024, 2025), plus the 2026 Australian Open. He beat Djokovic in that final and became the youngest man to win all four majors. republicworld lethbridgeherald Pace: He has won more majors than any of the Big Three had at his age. tennis365 2025: A 71-9 record and eight titles, including the French Open and US Open. He finished as year-end No. 1. flashscore Defining match: The 2025 French Open final, where he saved three championship points against Sinner in a 5 hour 29 minute final, the longest in French Open history. newstribune 2026 injury: He hurt his right wrist at the Barcelona Open in April. It was reported as tenosynovitis, and he missed Madrid, Rome, the French Open, Queen’s and Wimbledon. tntsports tntsports US Open 2026: He lost in five sets to Ben Shelton in the quarter-finals, a match that ended at 3:30 a.m. thepulseofnh Jannik Sinner (born 2001, Italy) Slams: Five. They are the Australian Open (2024, 2025) and US Open (2024) plus Wimbledon in 2025 and 2026. In 2024 he became the first man since Guillermo Vilas in 1977 to win his first two Slams in the same season. republicworld gulfnews 2025: A 58-6 record and six titles, despite missing three months over a doping ban. He beat Alcaraz to retain his ATP Finals title in Turin. flashscore Sports Illustrated 2026 hard courts: He swept Indian Wells and Miami, then beat Alcaraz in the Monte Carlo final to retake No. 1. He became the youngest to win all nine ATP Masters 1000 events. April 11th, 2026 +2 Missing piece: He still lacks the French Open for a career Grand Slam. He didn’t win it in 2026, when Zverev took the title. The rivalry Head-to-head: Alcaraz led 10-6 going into the Monte Carlo final. Sinner won that, so it stands at 10-7 unless they’ve met since, which I haven’t verified. lethbridgeherald 2025: They met six times, all in finals. Alcaraz won four and Sinner two. Wikipedia Dominance: Together they have shared nearly every major since the 2023 US Open. The 2026 French Open and US Open (both Zverev) are exceptions. atptour Style: The rivalry is described as a conversation, where one makes a statement and the other responds. Alcaraz is more explosive and creative, Sinner colder and more precise. Sports Illustrated How they compare to the Big Three Pace vs endurance: Alcaraz and Sinner are ahead of the Big Three’s pace, but the older trio won into their late 30s and early 40s. That durability is what produced the totals. Competition depth: The Big Three dominated a field with few other champions, while this era has two stars and a small group of contenders. Injury risk: Alcaraz’s wrist problem this year shows how much longevity depends on staying healthy.
