The circuit
Yas Marina is on Yas Island, which was specially developed for the occasion. From memory, the layout details are:
racingnews365
About 5.28 km, 16 corners and 58 laps.
The track runs past the Yas Marina yachts and goes under the W Hotel. Cars leave the pits through a tunnel.
It was reprofiled in 2021, when the slow chicane section was removed to improve overtaking.
Long straights and heavy braking zones are the main passing spots.
History
The race started in 2009 and has regularly closed the season since. It began as a day-night event, and the sunset start is now part of its identity.

In 2010 the championship was decided at Yas Marina for the first time. Sebastian Vettel won that title from fourth in the standings going in.
racingnews365
In 2021 it was again the title decider, after a season-long duel between Hamilton and Verstappen. It remains one of F1’s most controversial finishes, over safety car procedures in the final laps. Verstappen took the title.

Winners (from memory, worth double-checking)
Max Verstappen: 2020–2023 and 2025.
Lewis Hamilton: 2011, 2014, 2018 and 2019.
Sebastian Vettel: 2009, 2010 and 2013.
Others: Kimi Räikkönen (2012), Nico Rosberg (2015, 2016), Valtteri Bottas (2017) and Lando Norris (2024).
In 2025 Norris finished third in the race and won the drivers’ title.
Beyond the racing
It’s a big destination weekend, combining racing with concerts, nightlife and a full programme of entertainment across Yas Island. In 2025, the Grand Prix and associated Yas Island events recorded a combined attendance of 339,000 people. The venue also has Ferrari World and Yas Waterworld nearby.

One note: one source lists qualifying on “5th November”, which looks like a typo for Saturday 5 December. Check the official F1 site for exact session times.
Crashes, injuries and records at Yas Marina
Notable crashes
2018, Hülkenberg’s lap-one flip. After a collision with Romain Grosjean at the ninth bend, Nico Hülkenberg somersaulted through the air, landed upside down against the tyre barriers, and flames briefly came from the back of his Renault while he was stuck inside. He escaped unhurt.

2023 practice, Sainz. Carlos Sainz spun into the barriers at turn three, damaging the sidepods, floor, rear suspension, nose and front wing. That session also had red flags, including a Hülkenberg spin at turn one, and Jack Doohan, who was in a car during a practice session that weekend, radioed that he’d “almost had the biggest accident of my life.”

2021, Latifi. From memory, Nicholas Latifi’s crash late in the race brought out the safety car that led to the title-deciding finish. He wasn’t hurt.
Injuries
No F1 driver has been seriously injured in an Abu Dhabi Grand Prix that I know of. The serious injuries have come in other series at the same circuit:
Natacha Gachnang (GT1 World Championship). She crashed in qualifying at the end of the Turn 8 straight, at over 260 km/h, and suffered a double compound fracture of her right leg. The FIA medical delegate said it was not life-threatening and her condition was stable.

James Winslow (Gulf 12 Hours). After an apparent brake failure at up to 240 km/h, he fractured his spine in two places and broke his sternum and right wrist. He credited the circuit’s safety standards and the medical care for saving his life.

A related near-miss: Grosjean. His 2020 Bahrain fireball crash meant he missed the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix while recovering from burns. He never raced there that year.

The medical centre was built with this in mind. Before the first race in 2009, its chief surgeon said head and spinal injuries are the real danger.

Guinness World Records at Yas Marina
Longest vehicle drift (2013). Rally driver Abdo Feghali drove a Chevrolet Camaro SS around a small circle on the circuit. His first attempt was unsuccessful, but he then clocked 11,180 m of continuous drifting over 43 laps in 14.28 minutes. That roughly doubled the previous benchmark of 5,802 m, set in China in 2011.

Largest parade of GMC vehicles (2018). 191 GMC vehicles drove together on the track, in cooperation with local police, over more than four kilometres. It broke GMC’s own record of 181 vehicles, set in Kuwait in 2012. The parade was led by a 2018 Sierra Denali pulling a 30-metre flag with an image of Sheikh Zayed.

Official lap records for road cars
The circuit and the Emirates Motorsport Organisation recently set up a system for sanctioning production-car lap records. These are not Guinness records, but they are official:
Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT (2025). It is the fastest production SUV around Yas Marina, with a time of 2:14.046. It was the first event under the new format.

Porsche Taycan Turbo GT (June 2025). It is the fastest production battery electric vehicle, with a lap of 2:07.247 on the 5.281 km Grand Prix layout. The driver was Ramez Azzam, and the average speed was 149.41 km/h.

Land-speed attempts
Yas Marina is a road-course circuit, and its longest straight is nowhere near long enough for a true land-speed record, so it isn’t a natural venue. The closest thing I found was a plan to attempt the world’s fastest car record in the UAE with the Keating Bolt, but that was to take place at Ras Al Khaimah, not Abu Dhabi. I can’t confirm how or whether it went ahead.
